Introduction: sodium nitrate, with a melting point of 306.8 ℃ and a density of 2.257g/cm3 (at 20 ℃), is a colorless transparent or white micro band yellow diamond crystal. Its taste is bitter and salty, soluble in water and liquid ammonia, slightly soluble in glycerin and ethanol, and easy to deliquesce, especially in the presence of a very small amount of sodium chloride impurities, the deliquesce of sodium nitrate is greatly increased. When dissolved in water, the temperature of the solution decreases and the solution is neutral. When heated, sodium nitrate is easy to decompose into sodium nitrite and oxygen. Sodium nitrate can support combustion and must be stored in a cool and ventilated place. It is oxidizing and can cause combustion or explosion by friction or impact with organic matters.
Function: In enamel industry, it is used as cosolvent, oxidant and raw material for preparing enamel powder. In glass industry, it is used as decolorizer, defoamer, clarifier and oxidation flux for all kinds of glass and products. In inorganic industry, it is used as decolorizer of molten caustic soda and other nitrates. In food industry, it is used as a coloring agent for meat processing, which can prevent meat from deteriorating and play a seasoning role. In fertilizer industry, it is used as quick acting fertilizer for acid soil, especially for root crops, such as beet, radish, etc. In dye industry, it is used as a raw material for the production of picric acid and dyes. In metallurgical industry, it is used as heat treatment agent for steel-making and aluminum alloy. In machine city industry, it is used as metal cleaner and black metal bluing agent. In pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a medium for penicillin. In cigarette industry, it is used as a combustion supporting agent for tobacco. It is used as a chemical reagent in analytical chemistry. In addition, it is also used in the production of explosives. Chemically pure sodium nitrate is used for passivation of zinc coating with low chromic acid and oxidation solution of magnesium alloy.
